Green roofs are attractive, ecologically beneficial and offer several practical advantages to a business or home. It takes an experienced plantsman to know what perennials will perform well in this unique, often extreme microclimate.

A roof garden can double the life of the roof, provide insulation against winter cold and summer heat and reduce runoff by at least 50%. It reduces air pollution and dust and creates an ecological oasis for nature.
A roof is a very different environment from a garden rooted in natural soil at ground level, however. Very few North American Horticulturists have had contact with roof gardening. Germany leads the world in roof gardening field and Robert Herman spent almost seven years as "Meister", or Chief Horticulturist, of a prestigious German perennial plant nursery, providing plants to landscapers who installed roof gardens. He has visited research institutes and landscaping companies in Europe that specialize in green roofs and he is a consultant to Pennsylvania State University's roof garden research project. Contact Robert for help selecting plants and finding nurseries to supply them.
